In issue 260 (published in March 2008), Q magazine gave an overview of ‘50 years of Great British music’. Same again please, there’s nothing new under the sun. One issue pretty much summed up what the magazine has been talking about for the last couple of years. With all the respect for the magazine (unlike the NME it knows what the word music journalism means), but asking Jo Whiley to comment on the 00’s didn’t live up to the standard. Shameless self-glorification isn’t my cup of tea.
We all know about the europhobia that lives on the island, but isn’t music supposed to cross boundaries? I take the liberty to appoint myself Foreign Secretary of the Neon Enlightenment blog and hereby present you some indie fidgetty tracks from outside the UK … eat that Jo Whiley
# The Changes – Her You and I (USA)
Have been the support act for bands as the Futureheads, the Walkmen and the Kaiser Chiefs.

# BB Brunes – Blonde comme moi (France)
Popular in France, but due to the language barrier never had the chance to get a break through in non-french speaking countries. If you wonder what they’re singing about, the old formula: girls, girls, girls and being young.

# Capsula – Kicking it out (Argentina) *FREE*
With a name that refers to Space Oddity from David Bowie, they’ve already toured in the UK, Europe and South America.

# Team William – London LoFi (Belgium)
Reached the third place on the Humo’s rock rally and are known and loved for their live performances

# Cut off your hands – Still Fond (New-Zealand)
They tend to profile themselves as a british band these days, but you are listening to a 100% kiwi band.

# Kilians – Sunday (Germany)
Student band for students, very similar to the Strokes

# Dirty Skirts – Homewrecker (South Africa)
From Cape Town, but they’ll only make your ears bleed.
(Strangely enough they seem to be sponsored by Adidas?)

# and last, but not least, a special treat: the Ging Nang Boyz. We’ve been holding the Japanese madness for last. Shit sound but bloody good dance routine. This comes with a warning: your average indie gig will no longer satisfy.
Country specified blogs will follow, in the meantime let us know what other bands from over the world should be credited

I’ve got a severe craze for British indie rock and don’t think anyone can really deny the UK’s importance throughout the complete evolution of the genre. Still, you’re right there’s also a lot across the British boarders that also deserves to be mentioned. To name a few:
- Le Bataillon Des Fous (Sweden)
- Figurines (Denmark)
- Nunan (Belgium)
- Islands (Canada)
- Shout Out Louds (Sweden)
- Black Kids (USA)
…and so on. Enjoy!
Laura said it well, some of my favorites are from the UK, our little heroes LOTP are from Britain..^^, but don’t forget
Mando Diao (Sweden)
Millionaire (Belgium)
BlackBox revelation (Belgium)
Vampire Weekend (USA)
CSS (Brazil)
Bonde do Role (Brazil)
and so many more ^^
still much love for the UK though
I’d envourage you all to give
TheWeepies (Topanga, California)

Hey! I actually just released a 12″ record of the Ging Nang Boyz over in the United States a couple months back. I’m excited to see them getting some love outside of Japan!
